To be mated, the black king must get to f1, but first he has to cross the paths of the white Siren and Triton. It can only do this at the board edge so that there is no square beyond it for the capturing piece to land. The Nereid is needed to ensure that 7.Kb3 isn’t an alternative to 7.Ka3.
